With many different types and styles on the market, which should you choose? This guide will help you select the right folding poker table for your situation and budget. There are always a lot of retailers online selling several versions of these products due to the large number of people searching for them. The one you invest your hard earned money into should fit your needs and the those of your poker partners, work with the space you have available for it, and not clean out your bank account.
Essentially poker table fall into 4 groups. Poker table tops, fold up poker tables, folding legs poker tables, and furniture poker tables. Of these, the first three can only be considered folding types, where the furniture models are permanent setup, much like a billiard table, and cost several times more, often over a thousand bucks.
Because they are legless and weigh less, Poker Table Tops cost much less. If a large area is not available for a table, these can be used directly on your table in your kitchen or dining room. Your current chairs will work fine. Depending on what you want to pay, you will find varying sizes, shapes, and quality of these tops. The wooden base and felt padding on the high end models provides a more authentic casino “plink” sound when splashing the pot. You can usually find them to also have a padded arm rest. While the premium table tops generally run in the low 100 dollar range with shipping, the lowest priced tops start in the 40 to 50 dollar range. Usually they are made from a foam type material, and don’t have armrests. They do tend to have very colorful casino type designs including blackjack, craps, or roulette, in addition to poker. Their light weight also makes them ideal for bringing them to a traveling game. Trays for your poker chips with built in drink holders for your favorite drink are also commonly seen on these.
The next level in price are the Fold Up Poker Tables. These can be delivered for about the 160 to 250 dollars ranges. The plywood top folds in half for storing, but it still has the premium features like armrests, cupholders, and felt padding. The number one reason for getting the bi-fold table is the price is much less, since it is half the size of the folding leg tables when packaged for shipment. Shipping dramatically increases with size and weight. Additionally they can be delivered using standard shipping sources instead of an expensive freight company. Additionally, you can store them in less space. One problem is where the the 2 tops meet when you unfold it. The point where the 2 halves come together can interfere with card delivery is you are not careful. Some people would prefer to spend the additional money for a one piece top to not have the fold.
Folding Leg Poker Tables solve the problem. The wood top is one solid piece for a long, smooth playing surface with no obstructions. The drawback is the shipping cost is increased and so is the price, from maybe 300 to 400 dollars. The folding legs still do allow you to store them away but most often by leaning them against a wall, since they are far too large for most closets.
Shapes & Sizes: Folding poker tables come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on your need. For smaller rooms like in an apartment or kitchen, you can use a 48 inch octagon table. Comfort is a factor though, since the players will be sitting knee to knee if trying to fit 8 participants. I would limit the number of players to about 6. With room comfortably for 8 or 10 players, The oval tables are 6 to 7 feet long. But these tables are 7′ or 8′ long and as much as 4′ across, you need to consider the space requirements. Also a chair is needed for each person.
Hopefully you now have the information you need for finding a folding poker table that fits your needs, space, and price. Aside from playing in Vegas, there is nothing better than playing poker on one of these.
